Our Story

How Akal came to be

Akal grew out of a simple observation: most of the conversation around AI tools in Malaysia was aimed at large organisations with dedicated IT teams and comfortable budgets. Small businesses — the kedai runcit, the family workshop, the independent professional — were either left behind or pressed into packages that did not fit how they actually worked.

We set up in Bukit Mertajam because that is where we live and where we know the texture of local small business life. The Penang mainland is not short of hardworking entrepreneurs; what it sometimes lacks is practical, patient help for taking modest technology steps without feeling rushed or out of their depth.

Our founding approach has stayed consistent since we opened: observe the work before suggesting anything, involve the people who will actually use the tool, and keep every summary short and plain. We do not measure success by the number of tools we have installed. We measure it by whether the business feels easier to run six months after we leave.

Why we do this work

"Akal" is a word shared across Malay and several other languages — it means reason, good sense, the capacity to think carefully. That is what we try to bring to each engagement: not cleverness for its own sake, but thoughtful, measured attention to a particular business and a particular set of daily challenges.

Our mission is to make AI tools accessible to small businesses that have no in-house technical staff, no prior experience with automation, and no interest in being sold something they do not need. We want owners to feel that the work is entirely theirs — and that the tools they pick up after working with us genuinely belong to their daily practice.

Observe before suggesting

We spend meaningful time understanding how a business runs before we point to anything. A tool suggested without context is more disruptive than helpful.

Written summaries, always

Every session ends with a short written record in plain language. Clients are not expected to remember everything — and they should not have to.

Privacy handled carefully

We do not access client data unless it is strictly needed for configuration, and we never retain it after an engagement closes. We comply with Malaysia's Personal Data Protection Act 2010.

No unnecessary complexity

We actively look for the simplest tool that does the job. A more complicated system is not a better one. We resist the temptation to suggest upgrades that serve our interests more than the client's.

Ongoing learning, shared

AI tools change. We keep up so our clients do not have to. Retainer clients are told when something relevant shifts and given our honest view of whether it matters to them.

Honest about limitations

If a business's situation is not a good fit for what we offer, we say so. We would rather lose a client than take work we cannot do well.

Akal's consulting work addresses this gap. We work with retail businesses, service providers, food operators, and small professional practices across the Penang mainland. Our focus is on the parts of their daily work that are repetitive, time-consuming, and unlikely to benefit from a human touch — the things a modest AI tool can handle quietly and reliably once it is set up well.

What we bring is not just knowledge of the tools — it is the patience to sit with a business long enough to understand which tools are worth trying, and the discipline to stop there rather than suggest five things when one will do.

Our three service tiers — Discovery Conversation, Process Companion Package, and Steady Guidance Retainer — map to three different levels of readiness and commitment. A business can start at the beginning with no prior knowledge and no expectation of continuing, or it can begin with a specific goal already in mind and move straight into the hands-on work.

We are a small team and we keep it that way. Every client works with the same people throughout their engagement. There is no account management layer and no handoff to someone less experienced once the initial session is done.

Bukit Mertajam is our base but not our limit. We work with businesses across the Penang mainland and hold sessions in person, by phone, or by video call — whichever the client finds most comfortable.
